Spill Projects is excited to present an exhibition of new place-responsive paintings and works on paper by Jill Anderson and Gidja Walker OAM at AppleStick contemporary art in Balnarring.

The artists are long-time friends and for decades have taken to the road, camping and making art along the way. This project features works from their travels north for several months last year to Mutawintji National Park on the traditional lands of the Pantjikali, Wanyuparku, Wilyakali and Malyangapa peoples.

Anderson’s semi-abstract compositions are sensitively inscribed with patterns, textures and sounds. She often uses sticks and other found objects to bring an element of unpredictability to her mark-making.

Walker is a renowned ecologist and her deep knowledge of living systems is present in the detail and interrelationships in her imagery. Some works bear witness to climate change impacts such as River Red Gums producing brilliant purple foliage due to drought stress.

Anderson and Walker inhabit their own distinctive art practice as they share life together on the road. Their work forms a wide-ranging conversation spanning time, place, memory, ecologies and friendship.
