Spill Projects is thrilled to present an exhibition of recent place-responsive paintings and works on paper by Jill Anderson and Gidja Walker OAM at AppleStick contemporary art, Balnarring, Mornington Peninsula. This iconic local gallery has been reactivated after an eight year hiatus especially for this project.
The artists are long-time friends and for decades have taken to the road, camping and making art. This project features works from their travels north to Mutawintji National Park on the traditional lands of the Pantjikali, Wanyuparlku, Wilyakali and Malyangapa peoples.
Jill Anderson has been painting for many years, her semi-abstract compositions are sensitively inscribed with patterns, textures and sounds. She often uses sticks and other found objects to bring an element of unpredictability to her mark-making. Gidja Walker is a renowned ecologist, natural systems educator and a much-loved member of the local community. Her deep knowledge and reverence of living systems is present in the detail and interrelationships in her imagery.
Jill and Gidja inhabit their own distinctive art practices as they share life on the road. This exhibition invites the viewer into their unique ways of seeing and being in the world as their work forms a wide-ranging conversation spanning time, place, memory, ecologies and friendship.
